I'd love to introduce you to the Barbour family ... Wes, Kacy, Noah (five) and Braylan (almost two). When we did Kacy's maternity session earlier in January, she was about 37 weeks pregnant and starting to get uncomfortable. Everyone was a good sport about the whole thing and hung in there for photos like champs.
The first thing you should know about Kacy is that she had hospital births with each of the boys and didn't love the experience. She decided this time that she was going to do a med-free, all natural water birth. She found a place about 30 minutes from them, New Life Birth Center in Rocky Mount, Va. She was diligent about seeing her midwife and chiropractor during her pregnancy and you'll see that they both played a huge part in their day.
Six days after her due date, she called me at 5am on Friday January 30th. It was Baby Time! In true movie style, Wes got pulled over on the way in and had to show the cop what was obviously happening in the passenger seat. I got to the birth center 10 minutes after them and she was already 9.5cm, in the tub and in hard labor. Wes was wearing Braylan and Noah was playing quietly on his Leap Pad in the next room. They had read books and prepared the boys on labor and birth and told them they could be as involved as they wanted to be in the experience. Noah was a little nervous at first, but after a few minutes he was cheering her on and patting her back. Karen, the nurse midwife monitored the baby's heart rate and Ann, the doula, held Kacy's hands and reminded her how to breathe and work the baby down. It was all very fast and amazing to see. She got in the tub at 5:35 and at 6:22am, Coralynn Ann Barbour was born, quietly and calmly. They waited five minutes to cut the cord and Coralynn was alert and quiet on her mommy's chest. Noah asked to cut the cord and did a great job. Braylan kissed and petted the baby the entire time we were there. The boys could not have been any better and I was so proud of how they handled such a big day. Kacy's mom, "Mimi", got there a few hours later and promptly loved on all three babies for the remainder of the day. She took the boys to lunch and home to nap and allowed Wes and Kacy to spend some quiet time with their newest addition. Their chiropractor came and adjusted Coralynn and Kacy. After watching it, I'm a true believer! Cut to seven hours later and they left the birthing center and headed home. How cool is that?!
The song used in the slideshow is "Beautiful" by Jim Brickman and Wayne Brady. It's a song that's personal to their relationship so it's pretty sweet that they've chosen it to help welcome Coralynn.
Barbour family, thank you so much for letting me be part of your day. I hope you love your photos and enjoy your slideshow. Kacy, you were an absolute rock star! You handled her birth in the way you wanted and you did it beautifully.
